Question 1

Question 2

The administrative distance of each protocol is compared to see if that route is better or not.

Question 3

Letter “D” is used to symbolize for EIGRP (with a default AD of 90). Letter “E” is not used for EIGRP because it has been used for Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP). It is a obsolete routing protocol now.

Question 4

Question 5

If there is a default route then surely the router will forward all unknown traffic to there. But if there is no default route in the routing table then the router will discard the packet. In this question we suppose there is no default route in the routing table. Otherwise the question should state it (this question is unclear).

Question 6

Question 7

Question 8

Making a forwarding decision actually consists of three sets of processes: the routing protocols, the routing table, and the actual process which makes a forwarding decision and switches packets. The longest prefix match always wins among the routes actually installed in the routing table, while the routing protocol with the lowest administrative distance always wins when installing routes into the routing table.

Reference: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ip/enhanced-interior-gateway-routing-protocol-eigrp/8651-21.html

Question 9

In fact this question is not clear. If we understand that “router is unable to find a known route in the routing table” and there is no default route in the routing table then the router will surely discard the packet -> A is correct. But we are not sure if there is a default route or not so let learn more about gateway of last resort.

A Gateway of Last Resort is a route used by the router when no other known route exists to send the IP packet. For CCNA level, when ip routing feature is enabled, a gateway of last resort is usually created by:
+ The “ip default-network” command (but dynamic routing protocols have different behaviors). But in general, the “ip default-network” cannot set the gateway of last resort without a known route in the routing table.
+ Creating a static route to network is another way to set the gateway of last resort on a router. This is the reason why this question is not clear as it does not tell us if a default route exists or not.

Maybe in this question a default route does not exist. Otherwise the author would notice and indicate it in the question.

For more information about Gateway of Last Resort, please read: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ip/routing-information-protocol-rip/16448-default.html

Question 10

The default administrative distance value of static route is 1 which is always smaller than any dynamic routing protocol so it is always preferred to dynamic routing protocols.

    Question 7
If a route is not present in the routing table for a particular destination, what would the router do?

If there is no route in the routing table the router should not discard the package? For at no time the enunciation of the question signals the present-day representation of a standard route. What if a default route was not configured on this router? The right thing would be to dispose of the correct package?

In Q8 When a device learns multiple routes to a specific network, it installs the route with?

The response longest bit match (highest subnet mask) is not correct because it sais ” it installs the route with?” not which route the router choose. If the router are installed allredy, the router choose the longest prefix match, but if it has to install a new route, it will install the one with the best AD.
So best suitable response will be B Lowest AD.
    What do you think?
    Does anyone agree?

And respect to Q5&9 at last we can make it at head or tail, it’s an anbiguos question and depends on how luky you are.

    Why not the opposite?

I think in start configuration in routing table you don’t have any default of last resort.
We should also point if router didn’t found any match means that you don’t have any Default Gateway, because if it exist we will not give information “router unable to find know destination”

ip route any adres any mask

I agree with the above comments that say that Q8 is B.
The device learns about multiple routes to a network and must choose one to install – it’s not choosing an already installed route to use. It’s installing a new one. So it will use the lowest AD.

In Q.5 the supposed correct answer is D, but the explanation says the correct anser is B. What’s the right one? In my opinion is B.

By the same reason in Q.7 te correct answer must be C.

At no time, it is said the there is a default route configured. So, packets must be dropped.

On the other hand, in Q.9, exactily the same case, the correct answer points to A (discard packet)

    October 13th, 2017

9tut you are not consistent. These 3 question are asking the same thing and they all DO NOT say that there is a default route, so the answer for all 3 should be discard the packet. This not the case, discard the packet is the answer for 2 and the 3rd answer is default route, but none of the questions state that there is a default route. Please verify the question and then provide the correct answer or a better explanation for the answer.

If we understand that “router is unable to find a known route in the routing table”…per crappy cisco mind, default route is still a “known” route hence is configured on router and knows about’it.. i overthink this and i guess this is the only explanation to fit the answer

    Question 9:
When a router is unable to find a known route in the routing table, how does it handle the packet?

Opposed with what Becky suggest, I strongly believe the correct answer is indeed A. The questions states “known route in the routing table” and no more. The gateway of last resort on routers is set by adding a static route to in the routing table therefore we can safely assume no gateway of last resort is “known in the routing table”.

I suppose these questions’ phrasings are different. For instance:

q5 – “destination network is missing from the routing table”. Okay, concrete destination is missing, but default route still may be in routing table. Answer is DEFAULT ROUTE.
q7 – “a route is not present in the routing table for a particular destination”. As at the previous question.
q9 – “unable to find a known route in the routing table”. It is another case. Default route also relate to “known routes” as well as a concrete destination network. So, the answer is DROP.

  45. cthelite
    February 22nd, 2018

Only one person commented on Q6? How is B the best answer? That’s only PART of the decision?
Routers select best routes based on 1) Longest prefix match 2) Administrative distance (lowest wins) 3) Metric (lowest wins) The fact there are multiple paths from multiple routing protocols doesn’t exclude the possibility also of multiple paths in the same routing protocol?! Logic dictates the routing process must be followed thru for this question! Answer D is the best choice is it not?

  46. cthelite
    February 22nd, 2018

To reiterate, the question isn’t which route is put into the ROUTING TABLE… if each routing protocol had a different prefix for a route, then all 3 would be put into the routing table!… NOT just the one with the lowest AD!… the question is “which path does a router choose… with multiple paths… over different routing protocols”… the router (or packet) will CHOOSE the PATH that matches 1) longest prefix 2) lowest AD 3) lowest metric… D is the best answer. Albeit, maybe not the “CCNA” answer, which is so frustrating!

    I agree with Roman above…

Q5 is D. (default route) Key term is “DESTINATION network” not in route table. I think the reason that term is used is to differentiate 1) a particular DESTINATION route 2) a default route. There is no “matching” route, leads me to believe a default route is assumed… (see Q9 for alternative question)
Q7 is A. (default route) Same reason as Q5. A “PARTICULAR DESTINATION” is not in the route table. Differentiated from a default route which is “known” in the route table.

Q9 is why I answered the way I did on Q5 and Q7. This question is different. It says there is NO KNOWN ROUTE in the route table, that’s much different than the previous two Q’s. A default route is still “known” in the route table. If there is no KNOWN route then there is NO DEFAULT route. The packet will be DROPPED.
    Q9 is A. (discards packet)

(Based on logical assumptions, HA, on these Q’s? yeah right)

When a router is unable to find a known route in the routing table, how does it handle the packet?

    A. It discards the packet
    B. It sends the packet over the route with the best metric
    C. It sends the packet to the next hop address
    D. It sends the packet to the gateway of last resort

The answer may be D, assuming that default route has been configured on the router.

Every device out of the public internet can be reached via default route (gateway of last resort
